Now: EUV lithography at ASML
Marsel has spent his career in what most people would call dream jobs. The reality was mostly tolerance stacks, cost models, and arguing with suppliers — which turned out to be the interesting part.
He started at a global tier-one automotive supplier, first in advanced manufacturing, building out the complex assembly lines that produce powertrain modules, then in project management, running CAPEX and tooling analysis for xEV programs with major OEMs. Then Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, where the volumes were tiny, the racecars raced at Le Mans, the production cars roamed around both Europe and North America, and the job was redesigning components so they could actually be built — plus moving a big chunk of the supply base from Europe to North America without stopping production.
A lot of that work lived in the stretch between “we think this works” and “we can hand this to a customer.” Prototype validation. Crash testing. Powertrain and emissions testing. Durability runs on the track and on public roads, because the road always finds failures the proving ground politely misses.
Most recently he leads a mechanical design team at ASML, which builds the lithography machines that print the semiconductors in every car on the road — including the one in your driveway. Some scale: a modern car is around 30,000 parts. An EUV lithography machine is roughly 300,000, costs more than a small production run of hypercars, and ships in dozens of freight containers. Inside one, a laser vaporizes tin droplets tens of thousands of times per second to generate EUV light 13.5 nanometers wide, which then bounces off mirrors so smooth that if you scaled one to the size of Germany, the largest bump would be under a millimeter. Automotive tolerances are measured in microns. Lithography is measured in atoms. Cars are genuinely hard to build. This is a different category of hard.
All of which is to say: he's seen how these things get designed, costed, tested, and quietly compromised — and how rarely the interesting part survives into the press release.
